MOTORISTS are urged to plan alternative routes before roadworks begin on two of Bury's busiest highways.

The first improvements, which begin in early June, are on Whalley Road in Shuttleworth, from Peel Brow to the Pack Horse public house.

Later in the month, work will also start at Bury Street in Radcliffe, from Dumers Lane to Eton Hill Road.

Traffic lights will be used when required and both sets of works are expected to last 11 weeks. Work will be restricted on both schemes to between 9.30am and 4.30pm to avoid the rush hour periods.

Councillor Frank Adam, chairman of highways and traffic management, said: "By not working during the busy travel to work and home periods, we hope to minimise disruption to travellers.

"However, there is still going to be congestion because of the large number of vehicles that use these roads. Therefore, we would advise drivers to find alternative routes."
