HAVING read the letter regarding taxi driver medicals (May 18) I thought it reasonable to clarify the local authority's position.

Existing and potential taxi drivers are required to provide a medical report on initial application, every five years from the age of 45 and every year from the age of 65. Requesting the medical from the driver's own general practitioner means that they are examined by the doctor who is likely to have the fullest medical history of that person.

Written confirmation of the driver's fitness to drive is given to the licensing officer and, where any concerns are raised by the doctor, further specialist reports are sought.

If "Concerned Member of the Public" has a specific concern, I would ask that he/she contact me direct at: Development and Environmental Services, Textile Hall, Bury BL9 ODG.

W. A. JOHNSON,

environmental health manager.
