A NEW £7million hospital unit was opened yesterday as part of ongoing improvements to patient care.
The Acute Mental Health Unit, at Queen's Park Hospital, Blackburn, replaces the old Victorian buildings which Trust bosses admitted did not meet the modern standards of care.
The new unit is part of a plan to invest in all aspects of mental health including extra community facilities and extra specialist medical, nursing and Social Services staff.
The unit, built by Allen Build North West Ltd and designed by architects Gilling Dodd Ltd, consists of three wards -- two with 20 single rooms and one with 24 beds.
There is a Special Care Unit with eight beds, an out-patient department, a treatment suite and a 40-place Adult Day Care Unit.
Ian Woolley, of Blackburn, Hyndburn and the Ribble Valley NHS Health Care Trust, said: "This is part of a major investment in Mental Health Services within Blackburn, Hyndburn and the Ribble Valley. The new unit will offer modern facilities and an environment which will be of major benefit to patients with mental health problems."
