A LUXURY housing development being built next door to Calderstones Hospital is proving so successful a new phase of homes has been released.

More than 300 properties are being built on the site of former hospital buildings in Whalley.

More than 30 have been sold.

Potential buyers who are concerned about the proximity of the hospital are referred to the NHS Trust where a manager has been detailed to deal with inquiries.

The hospital houses arsonists and sex offenders who receive psychiatric treatment and care at the medium-secure accommodation.

There have been no complaints from buyers that they were unaware of the situation with Calderstones and who was kept there.

Builders Alfred McAlpine sales negotiator Joanne Mahon said: "Calderstones Park is a beautiful development and the houses are really selling themselves.

"It is proving to be a popular choice for local people who want to upgrade their homes."

News of the site's success comes in the week when MPs, unions and health watchdogs called for an urgent security review at Calderstones Hospital following a sex attack on a nurse, and a Calderstones patient went missing on an escorted visit home to Manchester.

The new phase will feature three and four bedroom three-storey town houses.

Negotiator Liz Orr said: "Calderstones Park is also an ideal place for commuters who want ease of access to the north-west motorway network."

Prices start at £159,950 for the three-bedroom town houses.
