AN alcoholic was found lying semi-conscious in the street in the early afternoon, among shoppers and children, a court was told.

Burnley magistrates heard how Pauline Storey, 54, lived with her partner who also had a drink problem -- and her solicitor said her home environment was "not conducive to sobriety."

Storey, of Cross Street West, Colne, admitted being found drunk on Market Street, Colne, and was conditionally discharged for 12 months with £55 costs.

Andy Robinson, prosecuting, said the defendant was literally carried into the back of the police van and taken to the station. She was not in a fit state to give details when she got there.

Peter Reynolds, defending, said Storey could not remember a thing about what happened. She only recalled waking up at Colne police station.

She was a registered alcoholic and whenever there was money around she spent it on drink.

The defendant had tried to get treatment from her GP and about two years ago went on a detoxification course. That was successful for about five months. Storey was doing her utmost to stay out of trouble.

Mr Reynolds added Storey's partner also drank and the home environment was "not conducive to sobriety."
