jobs to go FORTY-SIX engineering jobs are to go and a question mark hangs over the future of a factory which opened six months ago.

Leigh-based Peter Miles Engineering last week announced redundancies, most of which are based at the firm's new Hindsford factory, off Tyldesley Road.

A spokesman said: "All staff are aware of the situation and discussions are taking place with union representatives. The order book at the Leigh factory is very strong and is expected to grow further later in the year."

The Journal Midweek has been told that the grim news for the workforce comes following the return of a consignment of spirit levels from Germany. The company's Hindsford operation, featuring mainly female employees, has been working on a huge order of the aluminium-bodied instruments.

Leigh MP Andy Burnham said: "It's another blow to the area -- particularly with Ingersoll Rand's desire to move. I will do everything I can to work with employment services regarding re-training and news skills."

Mr Burnham believes the strength of the pound might actually save hundreds of jobs at Ingersoll Rand's Hindley Green factory, and wants decision makers to rethink plans to relocate to the Czech Republic. He has gone to the top in his quest to save hundreds of jobs at the Ingersoll Rand compressor plant at Hindley Green.

He has the backing of Department of Trade and Industry minister Alan Johnson.Mr Johnson has contacted the British Embassy in New York and Washington in an effort to halt any decision on switching Hindley Green production to the Czech Republic until thorough discussions have been made.

Mr Burnham said: "I am going to the top man at Ingersoll-Rand in New Jersey. There is a strong social case and there is also a strong business case for the company to stay in Hindley Green.

"There are things we may be able to offer to change the nature of discussions. The strength of the pound could be advantageous when buying in parts."

Mr Burnham has been elected to the Government's Health Select Committee. He said: "I'm thrilled. Health has always been my main political interest."
