RESIDENTS in Accrington have been praised for helping to stop the racial tension which built in the town following the Burnley riots from turning into violence.

Councillors and police chiefs have applauded locals for not responding to a series of firebombings which occurred just days after racist violence erupted last month

A school, car, car salesroom and DIY shop in Accrington were all attacked in one night.

Three people have been charged with offences relating to the incidents.

The day after the spate of alleged racist firebombings, an Asian family were forced to flee their home after it was set on fire.

Police believe the attack was also racially motivated.

Council leader Peter Britcliffe said: "I am pleased that this borough has responded to these incidents by rising above them and refusing to get involved.

"We work hard around here to foster an integrated spirit and it seems to be paying off.

"I paid a visit to the family whose house was burnt down and it was terrible to see how they were suffering."

Coun Doug Hayes, who holds the cabinet portfolio for crime and disorder, said: "I believe we owe thanks to all the sensible people in this borough.

"But we also need to thank the police for their massive operation which took place here.

"Officers from Lancashire, Cheshire and Merseyside did an excellent job keeping everything in order." Superintendent John Thompson, of Eastern Division, told a meeting of the police and community forum: "While I cannot comment on what happened in Accrington because of impending court proceedings, we were pleased by the reaction of the community overall."

Police yesterday offered £5,000 for information leading to the arrest of the people responsible for the firebombings in Bold Street. Anyone with any information should call 01254 382141.
