A COURT has heard how a Darwen drug abuser of 16 years was brought to his senses by illness.

Carl Leek was lucky to survive a leg operation. His health problem was linked to drug addiction and the experience had brought about a considerable life change.

Preston Crown Court heard how the 26-year-old had made strides over the past 12 to 18 months when he was due to be sentenced.

Leek of Hannah Street, Darwen, had earlier pleaded guilty to two burglaries.

Mr John Bailey, prosecuting, said in August 1999 a home was burgled in Melbourne Street, Darwen where a hi-fi, CD player and video recorder were stolen.

A carrier bag was found that had blood on it. A DNA test led to the arrest of Leek.

The other burglary occurred at Railway View, Darwen.

The family living there were away on holiday when the home was broken into that same month. Electrical items were taken.

Foot and fingerprints implicated another man who was later given two years prison for his part. The defendant was also seen by police.

Mr Mark Stuart, defending, said Leek had been an addict since the age of nine. He had a bad record for burglary.

During the earlier part of last year he had to have a leg operation. The defendant had been injecting himself in the leg and became extremely ill.

"He was lucky to survive surgery and even more lucky to keep his legs. "It really was a shock, probably a shock he needed. It has probably brought him to his senses regarding his drug taking which has gone on for sixteen years.

"The leg injury has resulted in a considerable change to his life. For twelve to eighteen months he has not taken illegal drugs and has kept away from offending."

Sentencing was adjourned for further consideration of the case by probation and a doctor. Leek was remanded on bail to September 17th.
