AN Inept display against an undistinguished visiting team launched Chorley's season in depressing fashion.

The Magpies, who recorded a league double over the Humbersiders last term, began as if all set to make it a treble but the spark was quickly snuffed out by the visitors opening goal and after that Chorley were never seriously in the hunt.

It could have been different if David Eatock and Andy Mason had accepted chances created in the opening minutes but after getting behind the defence neither player could hit the target.

North Ferriby promptly made Chorley pay by scoring from their first serious attack after 10 minutes.. Keeper Simon Marsh was deceived by a well flighted corner and Simon Wood rose to head home a soft goal at the back post.

This settled the visitors' nerves and they increasingly dominated a lightweight Magpies side unable to impose any authority in midfield. Steve Perrin ought to have doubled his side's lead before the break after a miskicki by Ian Leather but screwed his shot well wide.

Chorley enjoyed more possession in the second half but did not trouble keeper Paul Sharp, and it was North Ferriby who grabbed the all important second goal on 73 minutes.

Wood darted through a static defence to meet a free kick floated into the box and planted a firm downward header past Marsh.

Eatock almost pulled one back for Chorley late on with an angled drive which curled just outside the far post. Mason worked hard up front without adequate support or service but this was the only bright spot in a desperately poor team performance.
