A YOUNG dad found slumped over the wheel of his car and in possession of drugs could be facing jail.

Burnley magistrates heard how Mohammed Yasin Habib, 26, had overdosed on the body-building drug GHB and had been so frightened by the experience he now no longer took narcotics of any type.

Habib, of Larch Street, Nelson, admitted possessing 25 tablets and cocaine and was bailed until September 12 for a pre-sentence report.

The bench told him they were not ruling out custody.

Elizabeth Reed, prosecuting, said police on duty in Burnley found the defendant slumped over the steering wheel of his car with the engine running.

An officer removed the ignition key, reached out to try and rouse the driver and the vehicle began to roll backwards. The officer tried to apply the handbrake, but had to use the foot brake to stop the car.

Habib was removed from the vehicle but was unable to stand or speak. He was arrested, cautioned, made no reply and was taken to Burnley custody office.

The defendant was found in possession of ecstasy and cocaine.

Mrs Reed said when Habib was interviewed, he said he had been to a party and taken some temazepam and GHB.

He couldn't remember anyof the circumstances surrounding his arrest.

He said he knew he had the temazepam, but had no knowledge of the other substances and how he got them.

He may have bought them but couldn't remember.

Rachel Hodgson, defending, said after he had been to the police station, Habib was taken from custody to hospital, having overdosed on GHB.

He was not a drug addict, but had used them in the past on a recreational basis. Habib could keep out of trouble.

Mrs Hodgson said the incident had frightened the defendant. He no longer took any drugs at all.

The defendant, who lived with his wife and two year old daughter, had learned his lesson.
