A HEARTBROKEN husband has spoken of the seaside holiday that turned to tragedy when his wife was involved in a fatal accident on Blackpool Prom.

May Holden, aged 77, died in the Royal Preston Hospital six days after she was knocked down by a Vauxhall Cavalier while crossing busy Central Promenade in the shadow of Blackpool Tower with her husband Fred.

She suffered severe head and leg injuries and was taken to the Royal Preston Hospital.

Mr Holden, 76, was also hurt but discharged from Blackpool Victoria Hospital the following day.

Speaking from the couple's home at Hall Park, near Haslingden, he explained that they had been enjoying a week's holiday on the Fylde Coast and were staying in Cleveleys.

"We went over there a lot... we stayed at Cleveleys, Blackpool and Lytham at different times. We loved it there," he added.

The couple originally retired to Stalmine, near Fleetwood, but returned to Haslingden to be near their family and moved into their rural retreat near Haslingden in 1988.

Mr Holden, a retired engineer, said his wife had been born in Accrington and lived in Maudsley Street as a youngster. She later worked as a cotton winder in mills in the Haslingden area.

He added that after she retired she devoted her time to tending their beloved terraced garden nestling against a hillside in the grounds of Carterplace Hall.

Police in Blackpool have issued a fresh appeal for witnesses to the accident which happened at the junction with Church Street at about 10.30pm on Monday, August 13.

In particular, they want to speak to a taxi driver who was stationary at the scene just prior to the collision.
