A MEETING to assess public opinion on possible future uses of Barnoldswick's old Rainhall Road School will be held on Monday at the Baptist Church Centre, Manchester Road, from 7pm.

Lancashire County Council has said the building is surplus to its needs, following closure of the primary school. They intend to put the building on the market and have even asked about demolition to get a better price for the land.

Local councillors, unhappy about the project, have organised Monday's meeting to test public opinion.

West Craven Area Committee Chairman Councillor Margaret Bell said, "It's a lovely building which could be an excellent community facility. We want people to let us have their ideas about how it should be used.

"The county council could make nursery provision there, or more youth facilities. They shouldn't be in such a hurry to sell it off."

Other suggestions include developing a jet engine visitor centre as part of a heritage trail in Barnoldswick, or using the building as a health centre.

"These ideas are tentative, and might not come to anything, but they don't stand any chance at all if the county sells the property," said Councillor Bell.
