A BLOOMIN' marvellous day was had by all at the Leyland and District Chrysanthemum and Horticultural Flower Show on Saturday at St Ambrose's church hall, Moss Lane, Leyland.

The sun was shining down on the pretty petals and leaves, creating a lush and colourful venue for the perpetual challenge which blossoms twice a year.

South Ribble mayor, councillor Norman Crossley, pictured, who opened the event, said: "The show was very impressive.

"We had a wonderful day with good company and a friendly atmosphere -- some of the flower displays were quite unique."

Flowers such as chrysanthemums, dahlias, roses and fuchsias stole the show and were featured alongside a jungle of foliage -- creating a glorious glade of deep greens, delicately punctuated with buds.

The vegetables were a tasty favourite, but cacti were considered top of the class due to the massive amount of entries.

Five judges selected the best from each section and all winners were presented with a cup.

Julie Brandon, one of the organisers, said: "The weather was smashing and the displays were splendid -- among all this bright colour and beauty was the satisfaction of knowing they were all grown lovingly from seed.

"We do need more people to come and join our society, especially younger people to come to our meetings at the United Reformed Church meeting room, Quin Street, Leyland.

"They could gain encouragement from green-fingered members of the older generations along with the satisfaction of knowing they have produced something beautiful from seed, watching it flower and fruit and then exhibiting it."

The society has two shows every year. A rose show in the first weekend of July and another event on the August bank holiday. People interested in joining can call Julie on 01772 469313.
