I WRITE in response to several recent letters on the Bury Times carping on about the new fencing around Clarence Lido in Bury.

It seems that there some people who place their jogging routine around this fetid pond above the safety of our children. Others prefer to sit and watch the sun glint off the blue algae which now chokes this stagnant pit, giving little thought to the extreme danger that it presents to local youngsters. Allow me to point out the blindingly obvious to these short-sighted people.

The council have at long last been shamed into sorting out the problem of blue algae in the lido. They have realised that signs are not enough and that they have a moral and probably legal responsibility to protect our children. The fencing is therefore a temporary measure to keep people and animals out of the water.

Additionally, all of the natural vegetation has died off and there is a glut of fish in the pond. This is not normal. A current must now be created in the lido which is no small task and will take time to achieve. So stop being so selfish and give the council some time to sort out this mess.
