OLD people are working on their own sign for the times to help mark the centenary of Bury Library.

A dozen members of the housebound library service, all aged between 75 and 95, have been taking part in an arts project designed specifically for them.

They have been working with community artist Brian Raymond and Bury Council reminiscence worker Jean Lonsdale to produce an eye-catching banner, using skills ranging from fabric painting and embroidery to appliqu and design work.

And pictured finishing off her contribution to the art project is Mrs Edith Mawdsley.

The banner will go on display in Bury library during celebrations to commemorate the difference it has made to the lives of local people over the last 100 years.

Councillor Siobhan Costello, arts and culture spokesman, said: "This is the first of a number of arts projects being planned specifically for old people, a group which has previously had little chance to take part in such activities.

"I am sure they will have a lot of enjoyment and the banner they produce will be a lasting testimony to their involvement in the library's big birthday celebrations."

The project, which is based at The Wall Shop on Topping Fold Road, Bury, is a partnership between the Health Action Zone and Bury libraries.
