THERE will be a lot of ears listening to the radio tomorrow night if East Lancs get the better of Enfield.

The Transco Lancashire League title will be settled over the double header weekend with defending champions Bacup currently having just a two point lead over the Alexandra Meadows side.

Andy Clague's men will be praying Lowerhouse can do them a favour and beat Bacup tomorrow so that they hold the aces going into the final games on Sunday.

"Lowerhouse beat us on the final day of last season when we missed out on the title so perhaps they can do us a favour this time," said the skipper.

But Enfield will prove a testing fixture for East Lancs. They are chasing third spot and their pro Martin van Jaarsveld needs just 119 runs to break the club record - and he is desperate to do it.

"This will be a tough test," continued Clague. "Martin is obviously the man we need to get out although saying that they have some good amateurs as well.

"We do not want to give anything away and neither will they. It will be very tight."

And Enfield face another big game on Sunday when they take on Bacup at Lanehead.

"Enfield can have such a big say in the title," continued the skipper. "It must be difficult for them but it is good that they still have plenty to play for as it means they will have to be switched on for Sunday.

"We'll be hoping they put in a good performance!"

East Lancs last won the title in 1990 - but that doesn't tell the full story as they have been so close for the last five years.

They were in the hunt last year until the final day - when Bacup clinched their first championship in 40 years, Ramsbottom finished runners-up and that loss to Lowerhouse left East Lancs in third.

"It's so similar to last season. It could all go down to the Sunday - and we hope it does," said Clague.

"We daren't even think about getting beat tomorrow.

"But saying that we have only lost two games all season and it has been the weather which has let us down.

"Usually losing just twice would be good enough to win the title - but not this season."

He continued: "We have been the nearly-men - the runners-up - four times out of the last five years now so we are almost getting used to it. It is though still very nerve wracking.

"Bacup must be the favourites with the two point gap but we will all be listening to the radio tomorrow night as it would be great if we could have the advantage."

Bacup have been struggling to shake off East Lancs despite the fact East Lancs lost their professional Brad Young at the end of July.

They have called in Sri Lankan all-rounder Sajith Fernando, from Central Lancashire League side Werneth for tomorrow's game and will use St Anne's pro Dave Callaghan - their regular Sunday man - for the final game of the season at Nelson.

"It has been hard not having a regular professional but the amateurs have all pulled together well. They have played as a team and showed an excellent attitude to get us so far."

TOMORROW'S FIXTURES: Colne v Haslingden, Enfield v East Lancs, Lowerhouse v Bacup, Ramsbottom v Church, Rawtenstall v Burnley, Rishton v Accrington, Todmorden v Nelson.
