COUNTER staff at Bury's police HQ give 100 per cent when dealing with victims of crime and they've a report to prove it!

An independent survey by students from Bury College declared the civilian support staff "helpful, polite, smart and prompt" when dealing with members of the public.

Now, the 100 per cent success record has earned all counter staff a commendation from Bury's Divisional Commander, Chief Superintendent Phil Hollowood, who presented them with a certificate of appreciation.

Those who visited the police station in Irwell Street were there to either report a crime or traffic accident, produce documents, ask for advice and directions, collect property and answer bail. Surveys from other divisions around Greater Manchester were also carried out by local students with differing results.

In Bury the majority of visitors were attended to after between five and ten minutes while all felt the waiting time in general was acceptable.

Respondents were also given the opportunity to improve the inquiry counter service. Ideas include: provision of reading material, refreshment machines and extra seating.

Chief Supt Hollowood said: "I am delighted with this survey and its findings.

""Most companies and organisations conduct this type of survey to find out what their customers think of their product or service. They would be absolutely delighted with these results.

"Some of the people who come to our enquiry desks arrive upset having just suffered a crime. Others are producing driving documents after a 'brush with the law'. When viewed against that, these results reflect magnificently on the professionalism and compassion of our staff."
