ON Friday, September 28, I drove down The Haymarket in Bury, following several other cars. Unknown to me this route has limited access between 10am and 4pm.

A police officer waved me in outside Yates's Wine Lodge and informed me that I would be issued with a Fixed Penalty for £30.

What I find strange is that the police could afford to have two PCs located halfway down The Haymarket when there could be one traffic warden at the top advising people that they cannot drive down there. I thought the idea was to prevent "crime", not watch for it to happen.

My car was recently stolen and five days later I got a phone call from a PC saying that it was in Oldham and that the people who had it were acting suspiciously. I suggested to the police officer that they watch my car and catch the thieves but he said: "We haven't got time for that; just come and get your car before it goes again."

So they have not got time to catch thieves, but they have plenty of time to stand around in Bury issuing FP fines to harmless motorists. Maybe the "pot" needed topping up. I would love to know how many they issued!
