NEW plans for a controversial discount supermarket on Morecambe seafront are to be discussed by councillors on Monday.

Aldi's hopes of building a new store on the Empire complex were rejected in March this year because of worries over access to the site from Marine Road West.

The plan also caused a storm because it covered an area seen as ideal for a future tourism development as part of the resort's regeneration.

The applicant hopes to overcome access worries by using a road which currently provides access to the neighbouring Morrison's store for access, rather than the promenade.

The car park will also be available to the general public during the Summer season.

An appeal against the council's original decision is due to be heard on November 27 and 28, though developers will withdraw it if their new application is allowed.

Council officers have recommended that the plans are approved.

Cllr Geoff Wilson said: "Personally I think it's wholly out of place and inappropriate to have a discount supermarket in such a prime promenade location but un fortunately the council looks like it may have to go along with it because our hands are tied by regulations."

Cllr Wilson stressed that he and other councillors welcomed Aldi's desire to invest in the area but questioned that particuilar site.

The plans will be debated by the council's planning and highways regulatory committee on Monday. The committee meets at Morecambe town hall from 10.30am.
