BRADLEY Maylett produced a tireless display for Clarets reserves last night as he pushed for a recall to Stan Ternent's first team.

The 20-year-old winger scored the opening goal in a 1-1 draw, his third strike in two games, and he was a constant thorn in Barnsley's side as he galloped down the left flank.

With Alan Moore out for a number of weeks following a hernia operation Maylett will be hoping his eye-catching display will earn him a place in Stan Ternent's 16 to face Barnsley's first team at the weekend.

Maylett has made one appearance for the first team this term, in the Worthington Cup defeat by Rushden and Diamonds, but he was subsequently injured. He made 12 league appearances last season, all but two as a sub, but showed plenty of desire and ability last night.

Burnley's players had to display their fighting spirit as they battled hard for a 1-1 draw at Oakwell - despite being down to ten men for more than half the game.

And if substitute Anthony Shandran's last gasp lob had not come back off the crossbar, Ronnie Jepson's men would have been celebrating a third successive victory.

Burnley were up against it from the 42nd minute when French defender Arthur Gnohere was dismissed for a second bookable offence, although in one sense they did escape further punishment.

Having ruled that Gnohere had fouled striker Isaiah Rankin referee Carl Boyeson inexplicably gave a free kick on the edge of the box when the incident took place closer to the penalty spot.

Rankin had cost Bradford £1.1million when they signed him from Arsenal a couple of years ago, He never made the hoped for impact at Valley Parade and last season Barnsley signed him for a cut-price £350,000.

However he did little last night to suggest he will figure in the starting line-up on Saturday when the two clubs meet at Turf Moor in the first division.

The same can be said of Wales international Darren Barnard. After being dropped by Tykes boss Nigel Spackman at the weekend he reportedly asked to play for the reserves but did not make the expected impact.

It was fit again Graham Branch who was at the heart of most things for the Clarets in the early stages, pushing forward from his left back role.

But it was another returning player, Gordon Armstrong, who created the opener in the 19th minute with a lovely through ball that allowed Maylett to finish with some style.

The lead lasted just three minutes as Allan Pearce, one of four Kiwis in the Barnsley 16, was left unmarked from a free kick to nod home from close range.

Gnohere was booked for the foul that conceded the free kick and saw red three minutes before half time.

Having gone a man down Dimitri Papadopoulos and Rankin could both have secured a half time lead for their side, the Greek shooting wide when clean through and Rankin heading tamely into Luigi Cennamo's arms with the goal gaping.

The Clarets keeper had to make some tougher saves after the break, notably a spectacular catch after a drive from the impressive David Mulligan.

But no-one was closer to a winner than Shandran. Having replaced Papadopoulos in the lone striker role he latched onto a long Cennamo clearance but could only watch as his lob over the on-rushing Barnsley keeper looped high in the air and then bounced against the bar.

Jepson's record in charge now reads two wins and two draws.
