BURNLEY Football Club may be riding high at the top of Division One but there are still no signs at motorway junctions directing visitors to Turf Moor.

That is scheduled to be put right by the end of the season following a long-time campaign by one of the club's most fervent supporters, Burnley MP Peter Pike.

He has now been told that an agreement has been reached in principle for Turf Moor brown coloured tourist signs on the M65.

Mr Pike said: "I have argued for some time that travellers on the M65 see signs for Blackburn Rovers' Ewood Park and that it was only right that we should see Turf Moor signs at motorway junctions in Burnley."

He has now received a letter from the Highways Agency saying they had made some progress on the issue of tourist signing on the M65 for Burnley Football Club's ground at Turf Moor.

The letter adds: "Agreement has been reached in principle for the installation of signs to Turf Moor. However I understand that confirmation of funding has been slowed because the person handling the matter has been absent due to illness."

Mr Pike added: "Progress is being made but very slowly. I have been pursuing it because I did not it to slip off the agenda and be further delayed. I am in contact with Burnley Football Club and with Burnley Council and look forward to seeing signs on the road."

Mr Pike has also been told that the Highways Agency are to replace the 'Halifax' signs at junction 9 with 'Burnley West' signs and that the work should be completed by the end of March.

Signs to the Rossendale Road industrial estate in Burnley are also planned.
