A REMARKABLE pensioner got her just desserts for loyalty to her local pub when she was asked to switch on its Christmas lights.

Since the Feildens Arms, in Mellor, opened its restaurant last November, Jean Mabin has been a visitor -- every day!

Regardless of the weather, Jean, who is in her 70s, makes the short visit from her Whinney Lane home to the Mellor Brook pub every single day.

She used to drive herself but in latter months has given up getting behind the wheel.

Instead, she is ferried by local private hire firm District Cars.

Once there, she tucks into a two-course meal -- different every day -- accompanied by her favourite tipple, a small glass of lemonade with no ice or lemon.

Restaurant manager Kostas Miliotis was so impressed with his regular customer that he invited her to switch on the Christmas lights.

Kostas said: "She came here on the first day and has been coming back since, seven days a week. She is like part of the furniture. She is our best customer and when we needed someone to turn on the lights, she was the ideal choice."

Widow Jean said she was delighted to perform the honour and paid tribute to the staff at her favourite local.

She said: "The food is great and the people at the Feildens are very good to me.

"I've been coming every day for more than a year and I will keep coming.

"It was good of them to ask me to switch on the lights and I was delighted."

Jean was joined by Kostis and head chef Nigel Smith at the switch-on, which nearly had to take place in the daylight.

Apparently, Jean is not to keen on coming out in the dark but made an extra special effort on this occasion.
