LEIGH MP Andy Burnham and Hope Carr councillor Kevin Anderson met with management and staff at Volex to discuss the future, after the large-scale redundancies announced last week.

Around 220 jobs are to be axed at Volex Powercords, based in Greenfold Way on Leigh Business Park, as the company plan to move productions abroad.

At a meeting on Friday Mr Burnham met workers and said: "The mood among workers is clear. There is a sense that generations of local people have built up the business and now, after a couple of bad years, that loyalty has been overlooked."

Staff will be kept on until April, when the factory, which only opened in 1997, will be run as a warehouse by a skeleton team. This is the third large-scale redundancy the company has made, after they were forced to axe 325 jobs last year and 100 in 1999 due to increased competition.

Mr Burnham expressed his concern for the situation, saying: "It's very sad. We will meet throughout the redundancy process and will be looking at redundancy packages as well as opportunities for new employment."
