BURNLEY United's revival under Kiko Rodriguez suffered a blow as Barnoldswick United booked their place in the next round of the cup.

But it wasn't 27 goal leading scorer Paul Corrigan who undid Burnley but rather a rare strike from Liam Roberts who made the vital breakthrough.

Roberts reacted quickest to thump home Manzar Ditta's drilled free kick on the hour to finally break down a stubborn Burnley resistance.

A goal from substitute Neil Chapman two minutes from time sealed the victory.

Rodriguez, who left Nelson at the end of last year to take up the hot seat at Burnley United, has added steel to the Premier Division strugglers -- with the help of four Victoria Park old boys.

Craig Whittaker, Craig Heffner, Liam Barnett and Scott Gizon have all joined the Rodriguez revolution and all played their part in unsettling a Barnoldswick side currently in fifth place in the league.

Corrigan was naturally the main threat up front for Barnoldswick but, in a game dominated by defenders, his chances were few and far between.

Corrigan set up fellow striker Paul Hargreaves but he fired wide as he lost his balance.

Whittaker, who ran the show at the back for Burnley, set off on a mazy run and cross that brother Darren was inches away from connecting with.

Burnley came closest to scoring when Barnoldswick keeper Mitch Walker's punch clearance was met by the sweetest of volleys by Gizon who forced a flying save out of the keeper.

Gizon fired straight at the keeper soon after before Richard Sager blazed high and wide just before the break.

The contest was equally as cagey after the restart and Burnley's attackers were well marshalled by John Naylor and the excellent Nicholas Waugh.

Burnley keeper Tex McGinty was called in to action early on and was alert to hold Paul McDowell's quickly taken free kick.

Walker showed equal awareness to hold on to a cross/shot from Barnett.

With chances at a premium the first goal was always going to be crucial.

And it was Barnoldswick's right back Ditta who showed great awareness to fire in a low cross that Roberts tucked away at the far post.

Corrigan then had a great chance to double Barnoldswick's lead when he raced around the keeper only to drag his shot across the goal.

Rodriguez brought himself on and was immediately in the thick of the action.

McDowell then had a chance for Barnoldswick but fired wide after McGinty raced out to narrow the angle. Corrigan then opted for a placed shot rather than power before a great tackle by Ian Geoghan denied McDowell a clear run on goal.

Burnley had a late chance to take the game in to extra time when Whittaker and Gizon worked an opening on the left and Rodriguez controlled the cross, made room for himself but dragged his shot wide.

Barnoldswick then made sure of the win when Paul Hargreaves raced through and when his shot was blocked Chapman rammed home the loose ball.
