A TEENAGE mum today spoke of her love for the 14-month-old daughter who collapsed in her cot after an inquest was told the mystery of her death may never be solved.

Carolyn Jones, 17, was told in return she would never know why her daughter Paige Jade Jones died in the family home in Montgomery Grove, Burnley, on November 18 -- just days after the tot had taken her first steps.

An inquest at Burnley Magistrates Court heard how extensive inquiries by two pathologists and numerous tests had failed to establish a cause of death.

Carolyn has since moved to Piccadilly Square, Burnley, with Paige's father Anthony Robinson,18, who began working for household products firm McBride, in Windermere Avenue, Burnley, this week.

She told Acting East Lancashire Coroner Richard Taylor: "I have nothing to ask, I am just shocked. Everyone has done their best but there is no reason why Paige died."

The hearing was told that Paige was a healthy baby, apart from suffering from suspected pleurisy a month before her death.

Carolyn said: "She had been given antibiotics which had finished and had just started walking only a couple of days before.

"She had a meal and I put her to bed at 9.30pm. I looked at her at 10.30pm and then checked again at 1.30am when she had collapsed."

Home Office pathologist Dr William Taylor said he and a paediatric pathologist had carried out a post mortem examination at the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital.

He said: "I think it is fair to say I am afraid that we found very little.

"There were no external marks apart from those made in the attempts at resuscitation and a small bruise to her left buttock of no consequence."

The inquest heard nothing had been found on internal examination and even microscopic examinations had revealed nothing.

Dr Lawler said a whole range of examinations and tests were carried out and all the findings proved negative.

He added: "I have to admit that from time to time and despite careful and dedicated examinations nothing is found. We just don't know the answer."

Recording an open verdict Mr Taylor said that was simply because they did not know the cause of baby Paige's death.

After the hearing Carolyn said: "Paige was a nice, normal healthy girl. Everything is such a shock."

She said the tot loved Bob the Builder and was a big fan of the Tweenies. She had just started walking and saying a few words.

Both parents gave her mouth to mouth resuscitation to try to revive their daughter but she was taken to Burnley General Hospital and later died.

Carolyn said the couple's six-month-old baby daughter Kayleigh has Paige's looks and happy personality.

Paige's grandfather Peter Robinson added: "Although we don't know what caused Paige to be taken from us we know that every effort was made to find us an answer."
