THE next stage of work on a £265 million digital network programme has begun in Skerton this week.

Omne communications has promised it will work to minimise inconvenience to local residents in the area as it fits its new network this week and has pledged to work with the city council to reduce disruption.

Omne spokesperson Michaela Hunt said: "Building the UK's most advanced cable network inevitably means digging but we are undertaking a series of measures to minimise inconvenience.

" For example, the trench size is the width of an A4 sheet of paper with most work being carried out between 8am and 5pm Monday to Friday.

"Before we begin any work, we give 28 days notice to the council.

In addition, residents and businesses are notified two weeks and again 48 hours in advance of work commencing.

"If people have special needs - such as access for disabled people, older residents and families with young children - they can call our customer help line free on 0800 706 150.

Our aim is to complete the necessary work as quickly and efficiently as possible and to minimise inconvenience at all times."

Omne's network will eventually stretch from Lancaster and Morecambe to the South of Glasgow, and will bring a variety of telecommunication services, including digital TV, high-speed internet access and a phone service with free off-peak local calls to the area.

A helpline has been set up on 0800 706150 to provide information for anyone who has questions about how the construction will affect them.

Particular assistance is available to those with special needs such as the elderly, disabled people and families with young children who may need help.
