A NEIGHBOURHOOD campaign to install cameras on a busy road is gathering speed after a police trap revealed some motorists were travelling at more than 80mph.

Residents in Dunnockshaw and Clowbridge have stepped up their efforts after the police monitored traffic on the Rawtenstall to Burnley road.

Their request for a speed camera was turned down when county council highways officials said there had not been enough accidents in the area to justify the demand.

Local county councillor Marcus Johnstone has again taken up the issue after being told by police that research showed that 76 per cent of the traffic travelling along the road was breaking the speed limit.

He said: "I have been given a list of horrific accidents which have occurred on the A682 at Dunnockshaw.

"It includes three deaths, a woman who was so seriously injured her legs had to be amputated and countless other accidents. It makes grisly, horrific reading but until a camera is installed there will be more accidents added to the list.

"Too many people have already died and the only way to bring down the speed of the traffic and reduce accidents is by installing a camera."

County Coun Johnstone added: "I have asked the highways people to have another look at this because I believe the case for a camera is such a strong one.

"Too many people have died on this stretch of road and I share Dunnockshaw Parish Council's view that it is only a matter of time before there is another fatal accident."
