IN response to the various criticisms of Barbara Wilkinson (Your Letters, Jan 11) I would point out the following.

I use Bury town centre frequently as a pedestrian and it is one of the most user-friendly layouts for pedestrians I have come across. And I am comparing it with most major UK towns and cities, and Amsterdam and Brussels for good measure!

Secondly, there was no lack of action on gritting. By the time the cold spell was over we had used more than half our stockpile of salt and grit. Stocks have now been replenished and, unless we get mild weather, expenditure on gritting is likely to be up considerably this winter.

Regarding cycle lanes, their installation is one of the ways of giving people alternatives to commuting by car. We need to do this for reasons which everyone ought to understand by now.

One of the main deterrents to cycling is the perception that it is risky. Cycle lanes tackle this problem and if they prevent "chariot races" at peak periods that is all to the good. What they do not do is cause congestion, but make road use safer for everyone.
