NELSON's twin strikers Martin McClennon and Micky Bartholomew came good with a goal apiece to see off the challenge of the Seasiders in the NWCL Second Division at Victoria Park.

McClennon broke the deadlock after 57 minutes when he pounced to fire home from close range after Kieran Roberts' cross opened up the visitors' defence and Bartholomew almost doubled Nelson's lead minutes later but was foiled by keeper Stuart Barton.

The game had been evenly balanced up to this point and Nelson defenders Steve Tosney and Dave Leigh had needed to be alert to prevent Mechanics' striker Rob Park from giving his side a shock lead.

Mark Canning made a great save to deny the same player and safeguard Nelson's one-goal lead before Bartholomew made the game safe with the second goal.

The persistent Lee Coldridge used his speed on the right wing throughout the game and it paid off after 77 minutes when he pulled the ball back from the by line and his cross reached Micky Bartholomew at the far post, who beat the keeper with a header from six yards.

The Blues cruised to victory and might have increased their lead even further as Mechanics faded in the closing stages.
