THE Clarets youth side recorded a sixth win out of seven in the Youth Merit League at Turf Moor yesterday afternoon with a 3-2 victory over Grimsby.

Matthew O'Neill got two goals and Sean Blakey netted an excellent solo goal as they held on to clinch the victory.

Jimmy Robson, head of the club's centre of excellence, was in charge of the side and he admitted: "It was a hard game as they were quite a good side.

"They started well and there were a couple of good saves by James Salisbury. We then came in to it and had our chances before Matty got a scrappy goal.

"In the second half we started quite well and Blakey went through to make it 2-0."

That was the prelude to two goals in the space of 20 seconds as the visitors pulled one back before O'Neill smashed the ball into the net after the Mariners keeper slipped over.

A second Grimsby goal meant a nervy finish but Robson said: "They put us under pressure but we held out. The lads are on a good run at the moment and that is because they all pull together."
