WANTAWAY striker Steve Basham has been released by North End after failing to renegociate his contract.

The former Southampton youngster, who has been riddled with injury since signing for North End following a successful loan spell in 1999, is one of a number of players knocked off new boss Craig Brown's retained list.

Four out-of-contract players have been released, namely Steve Basham, Sadio Sow, Paddy Quinn and Thordur Gudjonnson.

Thordur returns to Las Palmas, having completed his loan spell at the club, while Steve Basham leaves the club for free under the Bosman ruling.

Basham was the victim of a nasty broken leg sustained in October of 2000 and has failed to command a regular first team place since returning from injury for the start of last season.

Neither Paddy Quinn nor Sadio Sow managed to break into the first team during their spells at North End and will now seek pastures new.
