MARK Westhead has became the second big-name signing in less than a week to leave Leigh RMI .

The ex-Bolton and Wycombe 'keeper is moving to Conference rivals Stevenage Borough.

The move means that Steve Waywell will have a busy summer searching for goalkeepers after both understudies, Craig Dootson and Dave Felgate, were released from the club at the start of the month.

Westhead, who commanded the penalty area in his time with the Railwaymen, was believed to have been offered a deal worth three times that proposed by RMI, and with funds at a bare minimum at Hilton Park, Waywell had no option but to watch the 'keeper leave as his contract also expired at the end of the season.

As the manager pointed out though, the move might not be such a bad thing. He saaid: " I know that Mark is a very good goalkeeper, but although he came to training, he never really trained with us because he was always on the treatment table.

"Towards the end of the season, you never really knew when he was going to be fit. It's still a disappointment to see him go but you can't blame players who leave when such good offers are put on the table for them."

It seems certain that Waywell will make a bid for highly-rated Altrincham goalkeeper Stuart Cobourn now, and will need at least one other goalkeeper before the start of the new season in case of illness or injury to his first choice.
