LEIGH Harriers Girls U17s track league season began in spectacular fashion at the Barden Stadium, Burnley, competing in the NW Central Division Two League.

The team finished fourth in an eight team league. Leigh's five girl U17s scored heavily with over 100 points.

Adele Swanton won the 3000m, was second in the 1500m and fourth in the long jump. Lizzy Heaton won the 1500m 'B' event as well as fourth places in the 800m and 200m.

Lora Morris was Leigh's top scorer in the field events with seconds in the javelin and 'B' discus as well as a third in the shot.

Recovering

Amanda Fearnley, who is slowly recovering from illness, was first in the 3000m 'B', fourth in the 300m and fourth in the discus.

Leigh's newest recruit, Emma Tonge, also had a good day by winning the 'B' 800m, third in the 'B' 300m and fourth in the long jump.

The U15s girls team was also in good form. Gema Farley was second in the 75m hurdles 'B', third in the 'A' 1500m and third in the shot. Rebecca Howarth won the 'B' 800m and was third in the 200m. Clare Thompson scored good points in the 100m, 200m and 75m hurdles. Emma Morris was third in the javelin, 1500m and high jump. Louise Boardman won valuable points in the 800m, shot and 100m.

Leigh's U13s squad gave some exciting performances. Stephanie Orrell won the 1500m and was third in the 75m. Emma Burgen was first in the 1500m and fifth in the long jump. Lauren Howarth was third in the 800m and fourth in the 75m hurdles. Hannah Warburton ran a gutsy race in the 1200m to finish fourth. Kirsty Hogan was fourth in the 'B' race. Andrea Kay had two fourth places in the 800m and shot.

The U13s finished the afternoon by winning the 4x100 in a time of 61.4.

Leigh's next league match is at Witton Park, Blackburn on June 30.
