WESTMINSTER authorities are set to put a bust of former Blackburn MP Barbara Castle in the House of Commons following her death this month.

The statue had already been commissioned before the Baroness passed away, but now efforts to find a spot to commemorate her within the precincts of Parliament have been stepped up.

The office of Tony Banks MP, chairman of the House of Commons Works of Art Committee, confirmed that the bust was now ready.

Originally it had been planned to place it in the new Port Cullis House, Parliamentary Building.

But now there is pressure to put her in the main Victorian accommodation which is reserved for Parliamentarians who have died.

A decision is expected soon on where and when the bust should be unveiled.

The news has been welcomed by East Lancashire MPs.

Rossendale and Darwen MP Janet Anderson, who worked as Baroness Castle's secretary and is currently organising her memorial meeting in London, said: "I am delighted. Barbara thoroughly deserves it.

"She was not just a major figure in the Labour party and Blackburn, but one of the great characters of British politics in the 20th century. She deserves it."

Hyndburn MP Greg Pope said: "This is excellent. Its a great idea.

"I am not bothered whereabouts she is.

"I am just pleased that she will be honoured in Parliament as one of the most important politicians of teh 20th century.

"People in Blackburn and East Lancashire will be very proud."
