A PENSIONER was killed and a mum and baby injured when an all-terrain vehicle mounted a pavement and smashed into a shop in Todmorden.

Firefighters called to the scene in Burnley Road told how the child was flung from a pram and trapped under the Toyota Landcruiser.

Emergency services crew thought the tot was a doll until it started to cry.

The accident occured after the jeep, believed to have been driven by an elderly woman, mounted the pavement and ploughed through a lamp-post, colliding with an elderly woman, as well as the mother and baby in a pushchair, before smashing into Marshall's of Todmorden Country Clothes.

The mother and baby were taken to Calderdale Hospital.

Five men, including an off-duty policeman and fireman, attempted to move the vehicle off the victims.

The two passengers in the Landcruiser are understood to have been the driver's daughter and granddaughter. They and the driver are being treated for shock.

Accident investigators are still trying to establish the cause of the smash.

Sgt John Sanderson, of the West Yorkshire Police road traffic accident department, said: "This is a tragic accident. We now have to find out what caused a sudden change in direction. We will be speaking to the people involved, including the driver."

Mike Cooper, who sells jeans on Todmorden market, said: "I first heard the smashing of metal. I thought it was a doll under the front of the vehicle but then someone said it was a child.

"People lifted the vehicle to get the child. At that time I don't think anybody knew about the lady underneath."
