A LANDMARK Morecambe hotel destined for demolition could be saved at the 11th hour.

The owners of the Grosvenor Hotel on Sandylands Prom say the only viable option for the 103 year old building is to demolish it and replace it with housing.

But one local historian Evelyn Archer says it's one of the few buildings in Morecambe worth saving and she has applied to have the Grosvenor listed.

"Knocking down this fine Victorian building would be scandalous," said Mrs Archer.

"In Lancaster they are using old buildings to build luxury flats and they are being snapped up.

The Grosvenor would be perfect for luxury flats, it's got great architectural features and unbeatable views across the bay.

Some will say it's not in a good area but all across the country areas considered to be run down have been revitalised by renovating old buildings.

I accept its days as a hotel may be over but to knock it down and replace it with housing would be a great waste of a fine old building.

There's not many left in Morecambe, we need to preserve what we have." The Grosvenor's owners, Westminster Properties Scotland, have said the refurbishment of the five-storey building would cost millions and are currently talking to planners about which type of housing scheme would get planning permission and be acceptable to local residents.

Architects are currently drawing up a scheme but an application by Mrs Archer to list the building will put a spanner in the works.

She added: "I may not be popular but it's an historic building, one of Morecambe's landmarks and should be saved."
