FORMER Burnley favourite Marlon Beresford is looking for a new club as of today.

The Lincoln-born goalkeeper's contract with Premiership outfit Middlesbrough ran out yesterday and, while Clarets boss Stan Ternent has said he would like to see the 32-year-old return to Turf Moor, no move can be made until the current wrangle over television money is resolved.

Beresford returned to Burnley on loan last season but was recalled to the Riverside during an injury crisis and missed out as the Clarets were narrowly denied a play-off spot.

Beresford joined Boro as a goalkeeping crisis threatened to derail their 1997-98 Division One promotion bid.

With Mark Schwarzer and Ben Roberts injured, then boss Bryan Robson swooped to bring Beresford in from Burnley for a £400,000 fee.

He started his career at Sheffield Wednesday but couldn't dislodge either Chris Woods or Kevin Pressman and had a number of spells out on loan at Bury, Crewe and twice with Northampton Town.

Beresford made his reputation as a fine shot-stopper once he moved to Burnley, and he was Division Two keeper of the year in 1993-94.

After more than 200 games for the Turf Moor outfit, he came to the Riverside where he was used as reliable cover for Mark Schwarzer and Mark Crossley.
