SEEDHILL was playing host to Lancashire Seconds today for their Second XI Trophy group match against Durham - weather permitting of course!

Ramsbottom's Lee Daggett and Burnley's James Anderson were in the team for the one-day match at Nelson Cricket Club's ground, which was due to start at 11am.

Meanwhile, Lancashire first team captain Warren Hegg has rolled up his sleeves ready for a scrap to avoid relegation from the First Division of the Frizzell County Championship.

Saturday's six-wicket defeat by Kent at Liverpool left Lancashire joint sixth in the table with Warwickshire, and out of the relegation zone only on number of wins.

They have now gone four games since winning their first two of the season, and skipper Hegg said: "We've got to look to the rest of the season now, and our primary focus of consolidation in the First Division.

"If it is going to be a dogfight, that's going to mean scrapping for every point. But I'm still confident we can do it."

Lancashire still have plenty of time, with only six matches gone and 10 to go - and the battle starts on Wednesday at Leicester.

Hegg was devastated by Saturday's loss, which came after a record-breaking ninth wicket stand between Peter Martin and Glen Chapple had set Kent an unlikely 360 to win.

But they cruised to victory for the loss of only four wickets with centuries from Andrew Symonds and David Fulton - Fulton after being dropped three times by Graham Lloyd.

"We paid for one bad session," reflected Hegg. "You can't drop five relatively easy chances and expect to win cricket games. I know no-one means to drop catches, but you can't drop batsmen of that class."

It was Lancashire's sixth consecutive defeat in all cricket, coming on top of their terrible one-day run, and Hegg admitted that has taken its toll on morale.

"Even the most positive guy in the world is going to take a blow from a series of defeats like this," he added.

"It is very difficult for me at the moment because as captain, you do take things personally.

"But that will make it feel all the better if we turn things around. I've still got every confidence in the lads' ability.

"Even in the Kent game, we've had some great individual performances from Peter Martin with bat and ball, Glen Chapple, and Mark Chilton and Alec Swann with their opening stand in the second innings."

But Hegg suggested that there could be changes for the Leicester game, warning: "It's about time people started putting some performances together."

At least Lancashire's losing run came to an end yesterday with the National League game against Surrey at Old Trafford washed out - probably a good job for Lancashire after Surrey had reached 152 for three in only 31 overs.

It leaves them only one place off the bottom of the Second Division of the National League.
