FOUR people were taken to hospital after a crash on the A59 at the junction with Pendle Way, near Clitheroe, at 5pm yesterday.

Two of the casualties were trapped inside their cars for up to an hour as fire crews cut them free.

Tea-time traffic tail-backs were caused along the A59.

The casualties were taken to Blackburn Royal Infirmary and Burnley General Hospital.

A spokesman for the Ambulance Service said that people who were trapped had serious head and rib injuries but that they were stable. The rest suffered minor injuries.

Police are investigating.
