REGARDING your story (LET, June 27) about Ribble Valley Council leader Chris Holtom using his emergency powers to upgrade the 12 certificate given to Superman.

Is this man for real?

By changing the film to a PG rating he has actually downgraded the certificate. The official definition of a PG film is PG Parental Guidance: Unaccompanied children of any age may watch.

A PG film should not disturb a child aged around eight or older. However, parents are advised to consider whether the content may upset younger or more sensitive children.

Whereas a 12 certificate states no one younger than 12 may see a 12 film in a cinema or buy a 12-rated video.

So where Coun Holtom gets the idea that children under 15 will be accompanied by an adult is beyond me.

All he has done by downgrading the certificate, is give children of any age the opportunity to watch the film, whereas, left alone, only the over-12s would see it.
