DAVID Dunn's granddad today admitted he was over the moon to hear his grandson had been called up for England.

David senior was out shopping in a local supermarket when he got the call he has been dreaming about from the moment he first knew his young protege had star quality.

"I had just nipped down to Asda when the phone went," revealed David senior, Dunn's biggest supporter and mentor.

"It was David telling me he was in - it's brilliant news."

That sense of delight was also shared by the staff at Rovers' Academy who first launched him on the road to stardom.

"I'm absolutely delighted for Dunny because he's such a good lad," said Academy director Bobby Downes.

"He's such a good role model for all the young players at the club that I'm sure everyone at the Academy is thrilled for him.

"Sometimes when you see them as 16-year-olds you don't always see them as future internationals.

"But David has never lacked in either ability or confidence so who knows how far that will take him?

"Hopefully, he will play and that would be fantastic for him."

Assistant boss Tony Parkes also expressed the first team's joy at Dunn's call-up and he insisted it was a fitting reward for all the player's hard work and dedication.

"I phoned David straight away and naturally we are all delighted for him.

"He's been working very hard and playing well, he deserves this.

"I don't think England have a big squad this time so, with a bit of luck, David will get to start."

Chief executive John Williams added: "We had been hoping David would get the call, it's fantastic news for him and for the club."

Dunn is the first player from Rovers' highly-acclaimed Academy to be called up to the full England squad.

He follows in the footsteps of Jason Wilcox who was the last home-grown Rover to represent England.
