ACCRINGTON Stanley will be popping the champagne corks tonight - but boss John Coleman knows he hasn't to allow the fizz to go out of their season.

The Reds clinched the UniBond Club of the Month award after their blistering start to the season which has seen them win five out of five matches.

They will be presented with six bottles of champagne for their achievement and also two bottles of wine for winning the Endsleigh Goalscoring award after firing home the highest number of goals in August - 11.

But Coleman didn't know whether to laugh or cry at the award which will be presented ahead of their home clash with fellow title hopefuls Vauxhall Motors tonight (ko 7.45pm).

"It's the kiss of death," groaned the Stanley chief. "I am not looking forward to it at all, I would rather have as less fuss as possible.

"The lads deserve it but I would rather have the big prize of the league title at the end of the season."

Goalkeeper Jamie Speare, who has kept two clean sheets in the opening five games, is more ready to enjoy the award - and he hopes the champagne.

"I would rather win the awards than not win anything. It shows we are playing well and doing what we need to do - win games.

"It could not have got any better at the start.

"We haven't really played that well but we are winning games and that is all that matters.

"I think we have a lot more self-belief than last season.

"We went 1-0 down at Colwyn Bay and last season we might have folded, but not this season."

The shot-stopper has been impressed with the new boys defender Mark Sertori and midfielder Mike Marsh who have brought their League experience into the UniBond Premier Division.

"I'm glad I don't have to face Carlo (Mark Sertori) at corners any more!

"That was always a problem when he played us," said 25-year-old Speare.

"But Mark is a big strong lad and he has brought in the experience we were missing last season. Him and Hacker (Steve Halford) compliment each other as does Jonathan Smith when he has come in at the back.

"And with Mike Marsh, what you see is what you get.

"He trains the way he plays and he has really gelled with the lads."

Top scorer so far is Paul Mullin chasing his 34-goal target he set himself last season.

"Paul is just Paul," laughed Speare.

"He always gives 110 per cent and he works hard in perhaps areas he shouldn't.

"If he stayed where he should he would get twice as many goals!"

Coleman is keen not to get too carried away but is happy after his side virtually threw away their chance of promotion last season with a bad start.

"It is going okay," said the gaffer cautiously.

"But this season we do have a desire to win games, even if we are not playing our best."

Coleman has injury doubts over Mike Marsh and Barry Shuttleworth, who both came off after just 20 minutes of Saturday's victory over Harrogate.

Simon Carden faces a late fitness test after a knock on his thigh earlier this season but defender Robbie Williams is back following his one-match suspension.
