AN Asian music night in a Manchester city centre club ended in sickening street violence which was captured on CCTV, a judge was told.

One man was attacked by three others, all from Nelson, as he lay on the bonnet of a car before he went to the ground.

Manchester Crown Court was told that Sohail Iqbal, 19, could be seen on the video lying motionless on the pavement near the Ritz nightclub. Prosecutor Roger Green said the most sickening and significant violence followed when one of the trio, Asim Hussain, briefly moved away.

"He returned to deliver a number of kicks to the body of the helpless figure on the ground as well as a series of punches," said Mr Green.

When police arrived Hussain, 19, of Railway Street, told them: "I have done nothing wrong, someone punched me."

Mr Green said the 1am incident last October lasted less than three minutes.

Hussain was said to have had a leading role with the other two aiming blows and kicks after a number of people left the club following trouble inside. There had been an evening of Bangra music which attracted a substantial number of young Asian men to the club in Whitworth Street.

Doctors found Mr Iqbal had an undisplaced fractured cheekbone, damage to teeth, black eyes and extensive bruising to his face and neck. Physically he made a good recovery but later complained of a personality change and disturbed sleep pattern.

Hussain admitted causing grievous bodily harm with intent and was sent to a young offenders institute for three years.

The recorder told him; "I have seen the film and it was truly shocking. You played the leading part in disgraceful violence. After such a vicious and sustained attack, what surprises me is that your victims injuries were not more serious."

Darren Preston, for Hussain, said his only mitigation was his guilty plea and his youth.

"He accepts what he did at the end of the incident was cowardly, abhorrent and wholly without justification," he said.

Hussain had been affected by alcohol and, like the other two, deeply regretted the shame he had brought on his family.

Students Shamraiz Ansar, 19, of St Paul's Road, and Osama Feroz, 21, of Beaufort Street, admitted affray. They were each given a community punishment order of 180 hours.
