Clarets defender Dean West will have talks with Stan Ternent in the next couple of days aimed at extending his contract with the club.

Last season's player of the year has been on a month to month contract since his last deal expired in the summer and the hope is that he will remain a Burnley player.

Earlier this month, West admitted that he wants a longer term deal although he has been left in no doubt that he remains a key member of Stan Ternent's squad.

He has struck a couple of goals this season, a free-kick against Blackpool and a penalty against Millwall, and once again he has been among the most consistent players in the side.

Having broken his duck against the Seasiders, the 29-year-old former Lincoln and Bury player admitted: "I hope they can sort something out because I am very happy and I think I have been playing consistently on the pitch.

"But being on a monthly contract is not ideal for me or my family and it would be nice to sort out a longer one when the current deal ends."

West has been a permanent fixture on the right flank all season and he was hoping to be fit to face the Dons this afternoon having struggled with a knock he collected against Bradford City at Valley Parade last weekend.

Ternent worked with him at Gigg Lane before bringing him to Burnley three years ago. Having played a key role in winning promotion he struggled to break into the side in the first season back in Division One but no one played more games than he did last term and keeping him at the club is important.

Another player who will also have to enter new contract negotiations next week is goalkeeper Marlon Beresford. His one month

deal, signed after a successful month with York City, expires ahead of the trip to Sheffield Wednesday a week today.

He returned to Turf Moor at the start of the month before the trip to Derby County and he was an ever present ahead of this afternoon's home game against Wimbledon.

Ternent started the season with just one keeper but, even though it threatened his place, Nik Michopoulos admitted he wanted to have another senior stopper alongside him in training and Beresford has been in fine form in his third stint with the club.
