A LEIGH junior school has received glowing accolades from church and Government inspectors.

Inspectors for the Government school standards watchdog Ofsted who visited the 225-place Leigh Street hailed St Peter's as a 'good and effective school', where both learning and pupils' attitudes and behaviour are 'very good'.

Ofsted last inspected the school in 1997 and since then the inspectors say it has made 'good progress'.

The report continues: "Teaching is good overall with a very significant amount that is very good and some that is excellent."

Successful achievements

The report highlighted St Peter's successful achievements such as Investor in People and Eco School status, as further indications of its success.

St Peter's also received top marks from the Church of England's Manchester Diocese. A Diocesan inspector declared the school 'welcoming' with a 'warm and caring environment'.

The inspector said: "The quality of the school ethos is very good. This is demonstrated by the calm atmosphere leading to high levels of concentration and a positive attitude towards learning."

Both Ofsted and the Diocese reports highlighted headteacher Patricia Jolley and her team's commitment and loyalty.

The inspector said: "The spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of pupils is a priority and a noteworthy aspect. Quality of leadership and management, by the headteacher and key staff, is very good and the school provides good value for money."

A delighted Mrs Jolley said: "To receive two such glowing reports in quick succession is a real thrill and a testament to the hard work of both staff and pupils.

"It has given us plenty to celebrate but is no cause for complacency. Everyone will continue to work hard to raise standards even further."
