A BURGLAR who went on a £10,000 burgling and thieving spree, is behind bars for four years.

Burnley Crown Court heard how drug addict Karl Porter, 32, struck at three homes in the Ightenhill area of Burnley during the town's holiday fortnight. He had targeted the houses knowing many local people would be away.

Porter helped himself to one victim's wedding and engagement rings and was brought to book after forensic analysis linked his trainers with a footprint left at one property.

Sentencing, Judge Barbara Watson said Porter had an appalling record and apart from the fact he had pleaded guilty, there was nothing to be said in his favour.

She added his behaviour had had a significant impact on the complainants who now felt insecure in their homes.

Porter, of no fixed address, had admitted three burglaries, deception and asked for nine offences to be considered. He had 20 previous convictions for burglary.

Mark Stuart, prosecuting, said the defendant struck at a property on Alexander Grove and took a haul worth £1,000.

Among the items stolen was a credit card and he then used it on six occasions within 24 hours.

At another house, Porter got away with goods worth £1324 including a wedding and engagement ring.

Mr Stuart said at the third home, Porter took property worth £950. Porter was caught after a footprint matched his trainer and when he was interviewed by the police for a fourth time, he admitted what he had done.

Robert Elias, defending, said Porter was a compulsive burglar and dishonest person driven by his drug habit and his pre-sentence report made depressing reading.

Porter went on a drive out with the police and pointed out the places where he had committed offences.
