RESIDENTS on the Hag Fold Estate at Atherton are hoping that crime will be kept out after the building of a security fence that stretches across the whole estate.

Work on the fence began in 2000 and it has been successful in reducing the fear of crime in the area.

The project was part of a wider scheme of improvements for the area made possible by a £450,000 cash grant from the Single Regeneration Budget.

Flats in Hag Fold have also benefited from a "door entry system", which works like an intercom but has separate buttons for trades people and personal visitors.

Mike Sollars, Wigan and Leigh housing regeneration manager, said: "The improved security along, with a more attractive environmen, will help to address the fear of crime, giving people the confidence to leave their homes and get involved in community life."
