SCHOOLCHILDREN in Rossendale displayed their knowledge of recycling issues by challenging waste experts at the launch of a major new scheme.

The youngsters from Helmshore County Primary threw down the gauntlet to local councillors and environmental officers in a waste recycling race at the launch of the Waste Not Want Not project.

Teams of pupils and adults did battle to sort piles of specially selected rubbish into compostable, recyclable and waste items in the shortest time and the four primary pupils were winners.

The event highlighted the new scheme which aims to recycle one third of the waste generated by households in Rossendale by 2005 to meet local, regional and national recycling targets.

This scheme is an £875,000 partnership between Rossendale Borough Council and Groundwork Rossendale with £350,000 of the funding being given by two environemental trusts, Lancashire Environment Fund and SITA Environmental Trust.

Both trusts are funded by waste management firm SITA through the landfill tax credit scheme.
