A NEW image for Blackburn is under way with the creation of a Cathedral Quarter.

Marketing bosses at Blackburn with Darwen Council believe that devising distinctive zones within the town centre, each providing a different attraction, will lead to more visitors.

The marketing of the Cathedral Quarter has started with 12 colourful lamp-post column banners in Darwen Street and Mincing Lane in time for Christmas.

The banners, which have a simple design based on the distinctive skyline created by the town's double towered Cathedral, welcome visitors to the town and highlight both Darwen Street shopping and Fleming Square.

The Exchange Arcade, which dates back to the 1800s and is located in Fleming Square, was officially re-opened last week after a £500,000 face-lift and includes five 'high quality' outlets.

Coun Andy Kay, Executive Member for Regeneration, said: "It is hoped that the branding will help people identify with the area and its distinctive uses, as well as complement and promote other environmental improvements taking place."

The Cathedral Quarter is already home to several of the council's flagship regeneration projects.

As well as bordering the newly-pedestrianised Church Street, it includes the refurbished Darwen Street and, in the future, it is hoped it will become the part of town known for high-quality retailing, leisure and housing.

Blackburn company Source Creative, who will shortly be relocating to the Cathedral Quarter, produced the designs and finance was received from European Regional Development Fund through the Blackburn Town Centre Marketing Initiative and Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council.

A significant contribution towards the cost of the banners was provided through sponsorship from businesses located within the Cathedral Quarter. The Zones scheme is a major part of the Town Centre Action Plan.
