POPULAR beat bobby Nic Fisher is unlikely to return to work until next year after it was revealed he would have to see a specialist doctor about injuries sustained in an alleged attack.

PC Fisher, who patrols the Stoneyholme and Daneshouse ward in Burnley, was allegedly assaulted as he tried to make an arrest near Merton Street Post Office in November.

He collapsed unconscious and was taken to Burnley General Hospital with cuts and bruises and is currently recovering at home.

He was originally due to return to work earlier this month but is said to be suffering headaches and must see a specialist doctor before he is cleared to return to duty.

A 20-year-old man has appeared before Burnley magistrates accused of wounding PC Fisher with intent to do him grievous bodily harm and is in custody pending an appearance at Preston Crown Court.

The alleged attack on PC Fisher came just hours after police swooped on a number of addresses in the Daneshouse and Stoneyholme area.

Police said PC Fisher was hit on the head with a blunt instrument as he tried to make an arrest. Community leaders have condemned the alleged assault.

A police spokesman said: "PC Fisher has not yet returned to work and must see a specialist before he is allowed to resume his duties.

"He is still suffering headaches and needs to be passed fit before he can return to work, which probably won't be until the New Year. He is looking forward to getting back to work."
